Pork Chops and Onions
Pork Chops and Onions will definitely be on your meal rotation! The onions caramelize in the slow cooker. So delicious!
How to Select Pork Chops for Pork Chops and Onions
Look for Freshness: Choose pork chops that are bright pink in color, with a fine grain and a moist appearance. Avoid any that look dull, have gray or brown spots, or are excessively watery.
Marbling: Look for some marbling (thin streaks of fat within the meat). This intramuscular fat helps to keep the meat moist and flavorful during cooking.
Thickness: Opt for chops that are at least 1 inch thick. Thicker chops tend to hold up better during cooking, reducing the risk of drying out.
Avoid Packaging Damage: If purchasing in packaging, ensure that it’s intact without any tears, excessive liquid, or discoloration.
Check the Sell-By Date: Always check the sell-by date on the packaging to ensure freshness. Choose the freshest options available.
Source: If possible, buy from a trusted butcher or a reputable store. Look for pork that comes from humanely raised animals if ethical sourcing is important to you.
Bone-in vs. Boneless: While you’re looking for boneless chops, it’s good to know that bone-in chops generally have more flavor due to the marrow and bone, so consider asking for recommendations or the butcher’s input on that.
Fat Trim: While some fat is desirable, overly excessive fat can result in a greasy end product. Opt for chops that have a manageable amount of fat to trim off if desired.
Organic or Free-Range Options: If health and sustainability are important to you, consider organic or free-range pork options, which often have better flavor and quality.
Smell: Fresh pork should have a clean smell. If it smells sour or off in any way, it’s best to avoid it.
