Nanaimo bars are a classic Canadian dessert known for their rich, layered texture and sweet flavor. They originate from Nanaimo, British Columbia.
Ingredients
Bottom Layer
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg, beaten
2 cups Graham cracker crumbs
1 cup coconut
Middle Layer
1/4 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons cream
2 tablespoons vanilla custard powder
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
Top Layer
4 ounces semisweet chocolate
1 teaspoon butter
Instructions
Bottom Layer
- Melt butter, sugar, cocoa in double boiler.
- Add egg and stir until cooked and thickened.
- Remove from heat.
- Stir in crumbs and coconut.
- Press into an 8-inch square pan.
Middle Layer
- Cream ingredients together. Beat until light.
- Spread over bottom layer.
Top Layer
- Melt over low heat.
- Spread over top of bars.
- Cool in refrigerator.
