How to use a waffle iron

  1. Read the Instructions: Always start by reading the manufacturer’s manual for specific details about your model.
  2. Preheat the Waffle Maker: Plug in the waffle maker and turn it on. Allow it to preheat until the indicator light signals it’s ready, usually in about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Batter: While it’s heating, prepare your waffle batter according to your recipe.
  4. Grease the Plates (if needed): Lightly brush or spray the waffle plates with non-stick cooking spray or a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
  5. Pour the Batter: Once preheated, carefully pour or spoon the batter onto the center of the lower plate, avoiding overfilling to prevent overflow.
  6. Close the Lid: Gently close the lid, pressing lightly if necessary, to ensure even cooking.
  7. Cook: Let the waffle cook for the time recommended in your manual, usually around 3 to 5 minutes. Do not open the lid too early, as this can cause the waffle to split.
  8. Check for Doneness: When the waffle is golden brown and crispy, it’s ready. Some models have an indicator light that signals when cooking is complete.
  9. Remove the Waffle: Use a non-metallic utensil to carefully lift the waffle out to avoid scratching the plates.
  10. Turn Off and Clean: Turn off the waffle maker, unplug it, and let it cool before cleaning. Wipe the plates with a damp cloth; do not immerse the appliance in water.
  11. Protect the Plates: After cleaning and cooling, with the lid open, lay a paper towel over the bottom plate, then close the waffle iron.

Ingredients

Units Scale
1 packet Martha White muffin mix 1 egg 2/3 cup milk Cooking spray Optional: chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries or sliced bananas

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the muffin mix with 1/2 cup of milk. Mix well until you have a fairly smooth batter (there will be lumps).
  2. Fold in optional ingredients.
  3. Plug in the mini waffle maker and let it heat up according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This usually takes a few minutes.
  4. Lightly coat the waffle maker with cooking spray. This prevents the waffles from sticking and ensures they come out crispy.
  5. Pour enough batter onto the waffle maker to cover the waffle grid.
  6. Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy. Cooking time may vary, but it typically takes 3 to 5 minutes. Follow the instructions on your waffle maker for the best results.

Notes

Double, triple or quadruple the recipe as needed.

We use our Dash mini waffle iron to make these (as pictured).

If not serving immediately, when the waffles are cooked, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Lay the cooled waffles in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for about an hour. This prevents them from sticking together during storage. After the initial freeze, transfer the waffles into a freezer safe bag or airtight container, placing parchment paper between each waffle to prevent sticking. Label the bag with the date so you can keep track of freshness.

To reheat the frozen waffles, simply pop them in a toaster or toaster oven until they are heated through and crispy again. Alternatively, you can reheat them in a microwave for a softer texture.
