Amish bread pudding is a traditional dessert that is popular among Amish communities. It uses leftover or day-old bread.
Ingredients
Bread Pudding
4 cups day-old bread crumbs
2 cups milk
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground cinnamon for top
Vanilla Sauce
1 cup granulated sugar
3 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon butter
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
Bread Pudding
- Place bread crumbs into a buttered 1 1/2 quart baking dish.
- In a saucepan, scald milk, then add butter, sugar, eggs, salt, raisins and vanilla extract. Blend well.
- Pour over the bread crumbs; sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden.
- Cut into squares and serve with warm vanilla sauce.
Vanilla Sauce
- Mix together sugar and cornstarch well.
- Add butter, boiling water and vanilla extract; cook stirring constantly, until thickened but pourable.
