3-2-1 Magical Mug Cake

Have your cake anytime you want it. 3-2-1 Magical Mug Cake is ideal for those “sweet tooth” moments, and it takes only seconds to make.

Magical Mug Cake

A mug cake is a single serving of cake that is cooked in a mug in the microwave. It’s a quick and easy dessert option, often made with simple ingredients like flour, sugar, cocoa powder, milk, oil, and baking powder. The batter is mixed directly in the mug, which means there’s minimal preparation and cleanup involved. Mug cakes typically take only a couple of minutes to cook, making them a convenient treat for those craving something sweet without the need to bake a whole cake. Variations can include different flavors, add-ins like chocolate chips or nuts, and toppings like whipped cream or ice cream.

Only three ingredients make your 3-2-1 Magical Mug Cake. As long as the container is microwavable, you can use any small container such as ramekins, small canning jars, coffee cups and mugs.

  • Total Time: 6 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x
  • Category: Dessert
  • Method: Microwave
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box angel food cake mix
  • 1 box cake mix, flavor of your choice
  • Water
  • Nonstick spray
  • Add-ins such as chocolate chips, miniature marshmallows, coconut, chopped candy bars, nuts, sprinkles (optional)
  • 1 can frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a gallon size zip-type bag, combine the two boxes of cake mix. Shake the bag to mix thoroughly. Or, stir the two mixes together thoroughly in a large bowl, and store in an airtight container.
  2. Lightly coat the inside of a microwaveable mug with nonstick spray. (The spray is not required but it makes clean-up easier.)
  3. Add 3 tablespoons of cake mix and 2 tablespoons of water. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of add-ins, if using. Stir to combine.
  4. Microwave on HIGH for 1 minute.
  5. If using frosting (or any topping), now is the time to add a spoonful. Eat out of the mug with a spoon or remove the little cake out of the mug.
