Shoyu Chicken

Shoyu chicken is a popular Hawaiian dish often served with rice. The word shoyu is Japanese for soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shoyu (Japanese soy sauce, any brand)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (1 inch) piece ginger, peeled and crushed
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1 cup water
  • 6 chicken thighs, bone in
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 green onion stalk, chopped

Instructions

  1. Mix shoyu, sugar, ginger, garlic and water together in a large pot.
  2. Add chicken to mixture.
  3. Bring to a boil on stove top, then reduce to simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Remove chicken from pot.
  6. Return pot to simmer and reduce remaining liquid for 10 minutes.
  7. Pour mixture over chicken; garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
