Mexican Cocoa

Mexican Cocoa recipe

This is the traditional accompaniment for sweet tamales, such as Sweet Pineapple Tamales and Strawberry Tamales.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 (1 inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, broken into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat milk and cinnamon sticks over low heat until steaming. Do not boil.
  2. Place chocolate and sugar in a small, warm bowl.
  3. Discard cinnamon sticks. Pour milk over chocolate and sugar and let stand for 1 minute.
  4. Whisk until chocolate and brown sugar are dissolved.
  5. Serve in mugs with a sprinkling of cinnamon, if desired.
