English Sausage Rolls recipe

English sausage rolls, a favorite comfort food, are a savory pastry snack originating from England. They consist of seasoned sausage meat wrapped in flaky, buttery pastry, then baked until golden brown.

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or lard 3 tablespoons cold water 1/2 pound uncooked bulk or pork sausage, casings removed 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon ground sage 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon ground white or black pepper 1 egg, whisked well with a splash of water

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix together flour, butter and water to form a soft dough ball.
  3. Roll on floured surface. Cut into 6 x 3-inch strips.
  4. Season sausage meat if using unseasoned meat, and roll into 6 small ovals. Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to become firm.
  5. Place each in a pastry strip. Roll up, seal with egg wash.
  6. Place on greased cookie sheet, seam side down, one inch apart.
  7. Bake for 35 minutes.
  8. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
