Date Nut Bread

This delicious bread is studded with dates and nuts. Try it spread with plain or flavored cream cheese! It’s delightful.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Put dates, sugar and shortening into a bowl. Pour boiling water over mixture and let cool.
  2. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.
  3. Sift flour with baking soda, salt and baking powder.
  4. Mix with dates.
  5. Add walnuts or pecans and mix well.
  6. Add egg last. Mix thoroughly.
  7. Pour into the prepared loaf pan.
  8. Bake for one hour.
