Bee Sting Cake is a favorite in pastry shops all over Germany. Bienenstich is the German word for “bee sting.” A honey glaze is applied to the top of this cake before baking.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Topping
1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup honey
A pinch of salt
3/4 cup sliced almonds
Filling
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup heavy cream, whipped
1/4 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
